St Oswald's opened to its first patient in 1986 to provide palliative care in the North East. That service has grown and expanded to meet the needs of the patients and families in the area and now they are one of the leading specialist centres in the country.

What is a Macmillan nurse?

Macmillan nurses are specialist nurses in cancer treatment and care, supporting people with cancer from the time they are diagnosed.

They offer emotional support and practical advice to people with cancer and their families in the UK and are highly trained in managing pain and other symptoms.

Click to go to website Macmillan NurseMacmillan nurses provide treatment and care to patients in hospital and in their homes. Some Macmillan nurses are also specialists in certain types of cancer, such as breast cancer and lung cancer.

Macmillan nurses work within the National Health Service and patients do not pay for them. 

They are funded by Macmillan Cancer Relief for the first three years, and then by the NHS.
